    Legal formalities for residence and work permits

    Students from the European Union, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein

    Citizens from these countries can enter Spain with a valid passport or national identity card.

    If you are going to stay for more than three months but less than a year, as a students you can apply for a Students' card, if you want to. If you are going to stay for more than a year, you can apply for an EU Residence Permit, which is valid for five years and is automatically renewable. Exchange students, for example through Erasmus, do not need to carry out this procedure.

    To apply for a Students' card, which must be applied for once you have been here for three months, you will have to present the following:

    • Proof of being enrolled as a student in this University (confirmation of enrolment form)
    • Copy of fully comprehensive health insurance, for example Form E-128.
    • Proof of having sufficient financial means to cover tuition fees and other expenses throughout the time you have applied to stay for. A copy of your bank statement is sufficient for this purpose.

    Work permits

    To apply for the Residence Permit or Frontier Worker's Card you need:

    1. A valid passport or identity card and certified true copies.
    2. Three passport-size photos.
    3. Applicants will have to submit a medical certificate as proof of their being in good health, should they be expressly required to do so.
    4. If the applicant wishes to work as an employee, a copy of the work contract or certificate will also be needed.

    This permit is granted if it can be guaranteed that the job is compatible with your studies.

    Students from outside the European Union

    Proceedings before travelling

    It is absolutely necessary to obtain a study visa from the Spanish Embassy or Consular Office in your place of residence. To do so, you must present the following:

    • A duly completed and signed official application form.
    • Letter of admission to the course from the host university or a letter as proof of participation in an exchange scheme from your home university.
    • Proof of having sufficient financial means to cover your expenses throughout the time you have applied to stay for. If you have to pay university fees, the amount will also have to include the cost of those fees. A banker's reference will be sufficient proof for this purpose.
    • Three passport-size photos.
    • You must present an original passport or travel document of which you are the holder.
    • You must pay the fees required by the Embassy.

    Staying in Spain

    Once you are in Spanish territory, and before your visa expires, you will have to obtain a Students' card from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. This card will allow you to stay for the amount of time determined by the Ministry. All the forms you need to apply for this card can be obtained from the Office for International and Educational Cooperation (OCIE).

    To apply for the Students' card you will have to present Application Form 750 and enclose the following documents:

    1. Copy of a valid passport or other document allowing you to enter Spain.
    2. A study, research or training visa.
    3. Proof of admission as a pupil, student or researcher at the University, which states that the activity you are going to carry out here involves attending classes, that the expected duration of the activity is not less than three months and that the subjects you are going to do take up 15 teaching hours a week. The confirmation of enrolment form will be sufficient for this purpose.
    4. Payment of fees, which comes to about 5 Euros
    5. Proof of having sufficient financial means to cover the cost of your studies, expenses arising from your stay and the return to your country; a banker's reference or copy of a bank statement are sufficient for this purpose.
    6. Copy of medical insurance or school insurance.
    7. Three passport-size photographs.

    The length of time before the card expires may be limited to the time your studies, research or training last or, should this time exceed twelve months, the card will be renewable yearly.

    Work permits

    Overseas students who are holders of a Students' card may exceptionally be authorized to work as employees, provided that the job is compatible with their studies. To apply for a work permit they will first need to have a work contract and this permit shall be valid for the same period of time as the work contract, with a limit of one year. It cannot be valid for longer than the duration of the Students' card.

    All these proceedings must be dealt with, from 9am to 2pm, in the Foreigners Section at the Police Station (Comisaría de Policía), which is located at the following address:
